Robots at official events: from the White House to the Beijing Games
In 2026 humanoid robots stopped being a purely technical subject and started appearing where politically significant things appear: institutional stages, international summits and televised competitions. Two episodes sum up the year, and they are worth looking at carefully, because one proves considerably less than it seems and the other considerably more.
A humanoid at the White House
On 26 March 2026, at the "Fostering the Future Together" global summit, First Lady Melania Trump presented a Figure 3 at the White House before representatives of 45 countries and executives from Meta, Microsoft, OpenAI and Google. The line that stuck was blunt: "Welcome to the White House, you are my first American-made humanoid guest." The framing was education: the idea of a humanoid tutor available at home with the whole corpus of human knowledge behind it, plus explicit insistence that safety is paramount.
What it proves and what it doesn't
An institutional appearance demonstrates political and industrial positioning, not technical capability. A robot that walks across an East Wing room, waves and delivers a few prepared lines is doing nothing we did not already know it could do. What it does signal is something else, and it is not minor: humanoid robotics has entered the technology-policy agenda at the same level as language models, and domestic manufacturing has become an argument in itself. That moves public budgets, contracts and regulation.
The World Humanoid Robot Games
The other end of the spectrum is in Beijing. The second edition of the World Humanoid Robot Games ran from 22 to 26 August 2026 with 666 teams and 2,056 robots across 51 events: 30 competitive and 21 scenario-based. For scale, the first edition in 2025 gathered 280 teams and a little over 500 robots across 26 events. In one year the number of competing robots quadrupled.
Records that are no longer a novelty
The 2026 sporting figures stop being amusing and become unsettling. Tiangong Ultra won the 100 metres in 9.39 seconds and three days later cut it to 8.86, below Usain Bolt's human record. In the 400 metres the mark was 38.15 seconds against the human record of 43.03. In the high jump, 2.88 metres, well above Javier Sotomayor's 2.45. A robot running faster than the fastest man in history is, like it or not, a milestone in dynamic control.
What the highlights reel leaves out
There were also robots that tripped, came apart mid-event or caught fire, according to CBS News and TechRadar coverage. And there is an important caveat on the records: a competition robot is optimised for a perfect surface, a known distance and a single task, with an engineering team standing beside it. That is not comparable to a human who can also do ten thousand other things. Top speed is a test of actuators and control, not of general intelligence.
Why the scenario events matter more than the 100 metres
The genuinely interesting part of Beijing 2026 is the 21 scenario events: household and hotel service, industrial tasks, firefighting, rescue, cleaning and medicine sorting. Those do not measure speed, they measure whether the robot solves a messy task with real objects. That is the metric that actually predicts whether these machines will be useful off a running track. And it is, not coincidentally, the part that almost never appears in viral videos.
How to read the next official appearance
With two questions. Is the robot teleoperated? At institutional events and scenario demonstrations it is common and almost never disclosed. Was the task rehearsed on that same floor, that same lighting and those same objects? If the answer to both is yes, what you saw was a perfectly legitimate public-relations demonstration, but not a proof of autonomy. The proof of autonomy always consists of changing the robot's environment without warning it.
